Get Started: Developer Challenge

The results are in! Here are the winners of the MyVox $25K Developer Challenge, and a little about each application:

1st PlaceFIRST PRIZE: WeMix (http://www.wemix.com)

WeMix is a project of the rap artist Ludacris, in conjunction with his partner Matt Apfel. They have produced a site where aspiring artists can lay down vocal tracks, upload instrumentals, and work with each other - and Ludacris - to create music and get it promoted. This may be the future of music production and promotion, and a natural evolution of the old record label business model.

WeMix uses MyVox to give every artist a voicemail box. More importantly, they feature contests around those voicemail systems, using them to let artists post new tracks and get them voted on by the community. Hot tracks get picked up by WeMix for prizes and promotion. It's a novel model, and WeMix has done a remarkable job of using the MyVox technology to make participation easy. Sign up for WeMix and check it out.

2nd PlaceSECOND PRIZE #1: Learnit Lists (http://www.learnitlists.com) is a language-learning widget that teaches you ten words a day in the language of your choice. What's unusual is that you don't just read the written words - you can hear them as well, and even record yourself speaking each word. This is because Learnit Lists incorporates MyVox throughout the widget. Their business model is based around people purchasing credits toward listening to words - but every learner can also contribute, by recording themselves speaking words in their native language, so other learners can listen to them. It's a clever economy, and it's all based around recording through MyVox. Learnit Lists has also been a leader in pushing (nicely) for new MyVox features, particularly around international calling. You may have noticed that we now feature a London-based phone number alongside the U.S. number delivered by the API, and there will be more to come; this is thanks to Learnit Lists.

2nd PlaceSECOND PRIZE #2: Social Soundtracks (http://www.socialsoundtracks.com) is a new Facebook service that lets you make song dedications to your friends. It's a lot like the old days of people dedicating songs to each other on the radio, but is made much easier by working through the Facebook social graph. Just pick a friend, record your dedication with MyVox, and pass it along! We think there's a lot of merit to this application, and they've done a great job of building it out. Now we're looking forward to Social Soundtracks making it so you can have the dedicated song in the background during your dedication (our personal wishlist item).

Honorable MentionHONORABLE MENTION: Maaap (http://www.maaap.com) offers an advanced voice memos/notes application that can be used from any cell phone capable of sending and receiving text messages. We were impressed with the wide range of features it supports, from posting voice memos to Twitter, to incorporating location information from Fire Eagle, to a smartphone version of the application that lets you browse the audio afterwards. Having run out of prizes, but really appreciating the work done here, we created a special Honorable Mention prize of $2,500 for the developer, and hope it will go to continuing to build Maaap into a great product.

Thanks to all the participants, many of whose applications can now be found in the gallery. We look forward to seeing your continuing work with MyVox!
